The second runway of Narita International Airport opened provisionally in 2002. After the opening of the second runway, the noise index of WECPNL defined by Environmental Quality Standards for Aircraft Noise showed slight decrease at many noise monitoring stations around the airport, although the number of flights increased and residents' responses to aircraft noise got worse. The local government of Narita city conducted a questionnaire study on 12,000 residents living around the airport in 2005 and 2006. More than 8,000 answers were collected and about 7,000 answers were entered into analysis. The questionnaire contains questions on annoyance, disturbances of daily life and subjective health. Individual noise exposure was evaluated with various noise indices including WECPNL, L_(Aeq), L_(Amax) and the number of noise events during daytime and night-time. The relationships between the noise indices and the residents' responses were analysed to investigate the validity of the noise indices.
