Acoustics based machine condition monitoring (CM) and faults diagnosis is becoming a very popular subject due to its merits such as remote measurement and rich information content. Many investigations have been conducted on this subject by analysing the noise emitted during machine operation, and shown very impressive results. However, due to the complexity of sound source and the environment influences, such as the reverberation and background noise, the performance of acoustic method is seriously limited. In this paper, a new acoustic condition monitoring scheme is investigated to suppress the influences of an industrial environment and enhance the desired signal by taking advantage of array technologies. A small scale acoustic array (SSAA), which has only 5 microphones, is used. To keep the accuracy, configuration of array and relative time delay estimation (TDE) algorithms are carefully investigated in simulated reverberant and noisy environments. Experimental studies are carried out by using the SSAA system to monitor diesel engine operation in practical environment. Results show that this system improves the performance of acoustic CM in the industrial environment, and has strong potential to be used for the further applications.
