Synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) is derived from crosses between tetraploid durum wheat (Triticum durum L.) and Aegilops tauschii, the donor of the D genome. They are of poor agronomic value, difficult to thresh, generally tall, low yielding, and frequently have poor quality (Trethowan and Mujeeb-Kazi 2008). However, they do carry useful and often times new variation for a range of economically important characters (van Ginkel and Ogbonnaya 2007; Mujeeb-Kazi et al. 2008; Ogbonnaya et al. 2008; Mares and Mrva 2008a). When crossed to adapted wheat, some synthetic-derived materials have been shown to yield between 8 and 30% higher grains than the best local checks (Ogbonnaya et al. 2007; Reynold et al. 2007), making them attractive sources for introducing new genes into the bread wheat gene pool.
