Ground-water contamination by chlorinated solvents is present at Site 45, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. One area of the site is contaminated as a result of a tetrachloroethene overflow from an above-ground storage tank in 1994. Comparison of contaminant distribution to historical documents and blueprints of sani- tary sewers indicates that transport of chlorinated solvents in the sanitary sewer and subsequent leaking from the sanitary sewer appears to have resulted in a second ground- water contamination plume. Both plumes are transported southeastward by ground-water flow gradient and are intercepted by the storm-sewer system, which is below the water table in those areas. Water samples show that chlorinated solvents are present in water found in the storm sewers. Thus, storm and sanitary sewers can have an important influ- ence on distribution, transport, and capture of ground-water contamination, and should be considered during site investigations.
