When anaerobic treatment processes are applied in-situ, interactions with the solid aquifer matrix are unavoidable, regardless of the organic carbon substrate used. These interactions affect the stability of the native minerals incorporated in the aquifer matrix, temporarily mobilizing certain naturally occurring (geogenic) metals within the treatment zone. This of course extends to metals of anthropogenic origin as well, and makes the geochemistry of metals mobilization something that must be considered as an element of the remedy operation. However, this is a transient phenomenon that can be effectively managed as part of the anaerobic reactive zone operation.
