The North Beach Disposal Area occupies the northeast corner of the United States Coast Guard Support Center, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Historic burial/disposal of industrial wastes in this area has resulted in impacts of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and pentachlorophenol in groundwater. Groundwater at the site is present as a surficial sandy aquifer with the majority of impacts present between 15 and 35 feet below ground sur- face. Groundwater flow in the surficial aquifer is affected by changes in surface water elevations of the adjacent Pasquatank River and drainage canal, and exhibits variable gradient/flow direction based on river level. PCE is present up to around 1,200 μg/L and degradation products trichloroethene, cis-1,2-dichloroethene, and vinyl chloride are also present.
