Incorporating existing water supply wells into a groundwater recovery and treatment system can be challenging. Water supply wells typically have long open intervals and produce water from multiple stratigraphic or fracture zones. Recovery wells used for groundwater remediation are generally designed to recover contaminant mass from specific zones while maximizing well drawdown to contain the spread of the contaminant plume. While there are perceived potential cost savings associated with using an existing water supply well versus. constructing a new recovery well, evaluation and possible modification of an existing water supply well can result in enhanced performance and potential cost savings. This paper describes the testing, implementation, operational results and cost savings associated with optimizing a 505 ft (154 m) deep water supply well (WELL-4) for recovery of a groundwater contaminant plume in a fractured bedrock aquifer.
