Kuwait environment suffered considerable destruction as a result of Gulf war in 1990 and over 600 of Kuwait’s wells were destroyed and ignited. The destruction of the coun- try’s oil production facilities and setting the oil wells on fire resulted in the release of huge quantities of crude oil over a large expanse of Kuwait’s desert. This resulted in more than 40 million cubic meters of soil contaminated with weathered oil. Different bioremediation approaches were developed, optimized and large-scale field demonstrated used at Burgan site, Ahmadi. Up to 94% reduction in the total petroleum hydrocarbons and total alkanes, was achived within a 15-month period. The phytotoxicity assessment of bioremediated soil showed no evidence of accumulation of toxic oil constituents in the plant tissues. A rehabilitation area was constructed to test the effect of the bioremediated soil on the growth characteristics of different native and ornamental plants. In general, the rehabilitation field test showed that the bioremediated soil was capable of supporting the growth of a wide range of test plants, including ground cover plants, shrubs and trees. The phytoremediation effect of each plant category on the soil residual TPH level was monitored over an extended period of time. Results will be discussed in detail.
