Ilse Smets, Jan Van Impe and Dirk Springael (K.U.Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium) Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is a former synthetic additive of reformulated gasoline that acts as an oxygenate and as an octane enhancer. Following accidental releases, however, it forms highly mobile recalcitrant contamination plumes in ground water. MTBE has a very low taste and odour threshold in drinking water; therefore, remediation of contaminated ground water is needed. At VITO, a stable mixed bacterial consortium with the capacity to aerobically degrade MTBE to tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and consequently to carbon dioxide (CO2) has been enriched out of a Belgian MTBE-contaminated soil sample (Moreels et al, 2004 -FEMS Microb. Ecol. 49: 121- 128). The aim of the presented work is to study the influence of various environmental parameters as pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), temperature, co-contaminant concentration (benzene, toluene and meta-xylene, BTmX) and substrate concentration (MTBE or TBA) on the biological degradation of MTBE and TBA by this mixed bac- terial consortium.
