In 2002, soil background levels for metals were established for the 106,000 acre Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) based on approximately 20 soil samples. These levels were calculated as the lesser of two times the mean or the maximum detected value. However, subsequent sampling at sites at APAFR indicates frequent exceedances of the established background levels for metals in locations with no related waste disposal sources. Therefore, more detailed evaluations were undertaken to determine the likely source of the metals. As part of the evaluations, the relations between reference metals (e.g., aluminum or iron) and trace metals (e.g., arsenic or chromium) were determined using regression plots. Also, other indicators, such as the spatial and vertical distribution of metals, were evaluated. The regression plots indicate that the metals often occur in constant proportions that would be expected based on soil weathering processes. At locations with known contamination, the pattern of constant proportions does not occur. To use the regression evaluation for background determination, a reference data set was needed. Therefore, background sampling was undertaken to obtain data representa- tive of the multiple soil types and conditions that occur at APAFR. This study included collection of 120 soil samples, representing surface and subsurface soil in 60 locations from wetland and upland locations. The samples were distributed based on vegetation type as a surrogate for soil classifications. Results were evaluated using simple descrip- tive statistics and using regression analysis.
