PAHs, as high as1000 ppm, contaminate a 31-acre site in Texas, down to a depth of four feet. The Industrial Remedial Standard (IRS), set by the Texas Risk Reduction Pro- gram (TRRP), is 2.4 ppm for benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), the governing contaminant of con- cern found at the site. Bioremediation studies of the PAH-impacted soil were conducted in five reactors evaluating natural attenuation, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation. We found that biostimulation with addition of surfactant performed best during the four month bench study, having reduced BaP by 61% with a biodegradation rate (k) of 0.2346 month-1. At this rate, BaP at the site can be cleaned-up in approximately 16 months, which suggests that surfactant-enhanced biostimulation represents a better bioremedia- tion option than natural attenuation alone, biostimulation without surfactant, and bioaug- mentation, with or without an added surfactant.
