A dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) investigation was conducted in June 2007 as part of a supplemental remedial investigation at Site 15, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, where trichloroethene (TCE) and its daughter products have been detected in soil and groundwater. Accurate characterization of DNAPL is critical for evaluating restoration potential and remedial design at the site. Three hydrophobic field screening methods, (1) NAPL FLUTe~R system, (2) Oil Red O dye, and (3) OilScreenSoil (Sudan IV)~R were used at five sampling locations to evaluate the presence/absence of TCE DNAPL in the subsurface and to compare the effectiveness of the DNAPL testing methods. TCE concentrations detected in groundwater at the five locations ranged from 12,000 micrograms per liter (μg/L) to 260,000 μg/L, providing presumptive evidence that DNAPL might be present at the site based on the “one percent of solubility” rule of thumb (EPA 1992).
