Trichloroethene (TCE) has become a common contaminant in groundwater due to its abundant use as a cleaning solvent for engines and in the dry cleaning industry. At Moody Air Force Base (MAFB) in Valdosta, Georgia, TCE is the primary groundwater chemicals of concern at a number of field sites. Natural attenuation of TCE at MAFB was determined to be nutrient limited, and therefore in situ biostimulation/bioremediation using emulsified vegetable oil and Shaw’s dechlorinating consortium SDC-9 was evalu- ated. At the SD-16 site, emulsified oil has been injected using two methods. The first injection of emulsified oil at SD-16 was conducted using permanent injection wells followed by the bioaugmentation culture, SDC-9, after groundwater conditions became favorable for reductive dechlorination. A year after the initial injection was completed, further delineation was completed and the remedial area was expanded. Base construction activities in the expanded area required additional injections to be conducted without permanent injection wells, and under a short time schedule. To accomplish these goals, emulsified oil and SDC-9 were injected into the construction area using direct push tech- nology (DPT) and during a single field event.
