The environmental remediation of a former agricultural refueling site in Stanislaus County, California provides a case study for discussion of techniques to optimize the in situ application of Modified Fenton’s Reagent in low permeability soil. Historical refuel- ing operations resulted in contamination of soil and groundwater to a depth of 70 feet with 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and total petroleum hydrocarbons primarily in the gasoline fuel range (TPH-g). Initial remedial action goals and objectives were designed to provide a cost effective approach to reduce impacts to cleanup standards over several years of operation using a combination of re-circulation well technology and soil vapor extraction. Within two years of operation, these methods had reduced groundwater and soil impacts by over 80 percent. Although these technologies were successfully reducing impacts to required standards, the client requested the use of more aggressive approaches that would allow residential development of the area within the year.
