Measure technology for strongly swirling fluid flow in cyclone separators: Application and comparison

Three representative measurement technologies, Multiple Holes Pitot Tubes (MHPT), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) on the strongly turbulent and swirling flow in the conventional cyclone separator, are described in the present work. The experimental data are analyzed and compared in order to evaluate the accuracy level of these methods. The comparison results show that these measurement technologies agree with each other well in general for mean velocity in cyclone separators. In addition, the calibrated MHPT method is simple with not much difference in measured quantities. However, as the new and PIV technology can provide the fluid flow characteristics in detail, including the turbulent parameters even gas-particle two phases flows and avoid the effect of intrusion on flow pattern.
