摘要

Systematic exploration in the southeastern coastal belt of Bangladesh for heavy minerals has resulted in the discovery of a number of heavy mineral sand (HMS) deposits in the coastal beaches and offshore islands. The mineralogical, geochemical, and mineral processing characteristics of the heavy mineral sands and their economic potential are presented in this paper. The HMS deposits contain on average 23% total heavy minerals (THM). Heavy mineral sand deposits together contain 1.76 Mt of economically important heavy minerals, comprising ilmenite (1.025 Mt), garnet (223 kt), zircon (158 kt), leucoxene (97 kt), kyanite (91 kt), rutile (70 kt, magnetite (81 kt), and monazite (17 kt). In the heavy fraction the average economic minerals content is zircon 4.20%, rutile 2.04%, ilmenite 26.03%, garnet 6.45%, kyanite 3.92%, leucoxene 2.30%, magnetite 1.87%, and monazite 0.31%. A large deposit of economic heavy minerals has been reported recently in the Bay of Bengal islands in the Bhola and Patuakhali districts and in the river sand bars of the Brahmaputra. Processing of bulk samples has been carried out at the pilot plant of BAEC at Cox's Bazar to test the separation characteristics of individual heavy minerals using gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation. Geochemical studies on separated minerals show that the TiO_2 content in rutile is around 90% and ZrO_2 in zircon is around 65%, which are quite satisfactory in respect of commercial grade. The ilmenite contains a low level of titanium dioxide (around 43%) and higher levels of chromium, manganese, and iron. Beneficiation and upgrading will be required to make the ilmenite a marketable commodity.
