Ionizing radiation is an important source of oxidative stress in biological systems. Its deleterious effects in cells are mediated by reactive oxygen species leading to cell death or mutations in normal cells. It is routinely used for treatment of different types of tumors. Protection of normal tissues and sensitization of tumor cells to radiation remains a challenging task. Hence, natural compounds capable of modulating radiation effects will have potential benefits. Vitamin E is a generic term used for tocopherols and tocotrienols. Both tocopherols and tocotrienols exist as alpha, beta,gamma and delta forms. Tocotrienols occupy a special place among the vitamin E group of compounds due to their unique chemical structure and properties. Tocopherols and tocotrienols differ structurally in that tocopherols contain a saturated phytyl chain, and tocotrienols possess an unsaturated side chain attached to 1 -position on the chroman ring. Tocotrienols are primarily derived from oat, wheat germ, barley, rye, rice bran and palm oil. It is reported that tocotrienols exert more significant effects than tocopherols due to higher accumulation of tocotrienols in the cells than tocopherols (Sen et al., 2006).
