In the perinatal period, nearly half of all piglet losses are stillborns or piglets not capable of surviving. These facts will be discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the duration of birth and its medical stimulation. Materials and Methods. Farrowing results and duration of birth were investigated in 7 pig holdings with 250 - 2,500 sows. The production of the farms is in 7- or 21 -day periods with an all-in - all-out use of the pig sties.
