For centuries, silk and spices had been imported to Europe through an overland route known as the Silk Road. However, the rise of the Ottoman Empire, culminating with its capture of Constantinople in 1453, made the overland route much more dangerous. As a result, alternate supply routes were sought, one of which resulted in Christopher Columbus' accidental discovery of the Americas with its unimagined opportunities and challenges. The global butadiene markets are at a similar cross road. The continued emergence of lighter ethylene cracker feedstocks is slowing the growth of coproduct crude C4 production. At the same time, butadi- ene consumption continues to grow rapidly in the developing world. As a result, the market is heading for chronic shortages, or put another way, an alternate supply source must be found. The timing of the supply shortage is heavily dependent on market trends in China, North America and a number of other parts of the world. Butadiene can be produced on purpose through a number of different routes, including butane or butylenes dehydrogenation and bio based processes. The questions facing the market are not whether on purpose butadiene will be required, but rather when, what source and what will it do to the existing market.
