HCl has generally been a stable and perhaps somewhat overlooked market at some times in the past. Changes to the supply and demand balance in the USA in 2011 have seen merchant market prices virtu- ally treble in only six months however. This has been caused by constraints on supply occurring at the same time as demand in some applica- tions has seen a signifcant boost – the resulting signifcant tightness led to an abrupt price rise. Prices are currently at high levels but are expected to moderate in late 2012 and into 2013 as HCl is diverted into the merchant market by some suppliers and as new supply also becomes available – the higher demand and new supply represents a structural shift in the market. In Europe, prices have remained very fat but could be subject to conficting infuences in future, includ- ing the potential growth in European shale gas set against new by-product HCl supply from isocyanates manufacturers. Longer term, reductions in capacity may occur if mercury-based chlor-alkali plants close closer to the end of the decade.
