Toluene and mixed xylenes are two building blocks of the petrochemical industry that fnd end uses ranging from coatings to manmade fbres. One end use that does stand out is polyester which is respon- sible for over ffty percent of the demand for these two products. The major feedstock for both toluene and mixed xylenes is reformate which accounts for over seventy percent of the supply of these two products. Reformate is a high octane stream that is usually produced in a refnery as a gasoline blending component. Pyrolysis gasoline (pygas) which is a by-product of ethylene production can also be a source of both toluene and mixed xylenes, although more toluene is extracted from pygas than are mixed xylenes. Toluene can also be converted to mixed xylenes and is an important route to them.
