摘要

An unprecedented wave of new olefns capacity has started up over the last three years. Twelve new crackers, amounting to 13 million metric tons ethylene capacity, have been commissioned, contributing to a doubling of regional ethylene capacity during the 2007- 2012 period. Such a volume of new capacity was expected to have an overwhelming effect on global markets, but the reality has been more muted. Project delays, disconnects between crackers and derivative units starting up, operational teething problems and some shortages of feedstock have limited the impact. Exports of ethylene and propylene derivatives have increased by a combined seven million metric tons per annum of equivalent olefn since 2007, but this has been absorbed by strong demand growth in Asia, principally China. There remains signifcant potential for more exports from the new plants which we expect to see over the coming years.
