PTA producers have been reaping a bonanza ever since the second half of 2009. Polyester demand grew by around 5 million tons (11 percent) in 2010 and this created a strong pull on PTA demand. At a time when new capacity addition has been slow, PTA supplies have been running extremely tight, not only within China but in all PTA producing regions in the world. PTA spreads (measured as PTA price less 0.66 times PX price) have more than doubled within the last two years and producers have recorded bumper profts in 2010, with the situation in 2011 looking even better at present.
