A year ago the expectation was that global benzene demand after contracting in 2008 and 2009 would once again resume growth. We were right! However, we underestimated just how much it would grow. Since the mid-1980s there have only been four occasions that annual growth surpassed two million tons. In 2010, it surpassed three million tons. This strength caught the industry by surprise and ben- zene balances continue to struggle and remain balanced to tight on a constant basis. Hence, expensive benzene! Energy does lend support to higher prices but recent benzene prices have exceeded their traditional relationships.
