摘要

In recent years, many reports have described the increase of fine sediment (FS) load, such as silt and clay of <2 mm diame-ter, in rivers and streams that result from human activities such as farm development and channel works (CLINE et al. 1982, RICHARDS et al. 1993). Fine sediment negatively influences the lotic ecosystem in the stream (RYAN 1991), and deposition on streambeds destroys fish spawning habitats and creates respi-ratory problems for aquatic insects. It also causes a propor-tional reduction in the organic matter contents in periphyton (GRAHAM 1990). Accumulation of FS on benthic algae may affect their biomass due to photosynthetic problem caused by light limitation. Benthic algal communities developed on streambeds lose their biomass gradually under normal stream conditions, or rapidly in floods due to the shear force of the current. The detached algal body arc carried downstream as suspended organic matters by the current. Although this tearing-off pro-cess is important from the aspect of organic load to the lower reaches of the stream, few studies have been conducted to assess the factors that affect the process (HORNER et al. 1990, BIGGS & THOMSEN 1995). This study was designed to clarify the relationship between FS deposition, the development of ben-thic algae, and theirtearing-off process on streambeds in the rif-fle.
