The giant floater (Pyganodon grandis) is an excellent mussel species for growth studies because it is widespread in North America (CLARKE 1981) and has been widely studied. Numerous studies have documented its depth distribution in lakes, substrate preferences, hydrological requirements, production of internal and external “annuli”, and production. This species has been characterized as slow growing (ANTHONY et al. 2001), fast growing (MORRIS & CORK UM 1999), quite large (MACKIE & TOPPING 1988), and small (HANSON et al. 1988a). The depth distribution of P grandis ranges from about I m to 13-14 m (GHENT et al. 1978, HANSON et al. 1988b), so they are exposed to a wide range of seasonal temperature regimes. The purpose of this study was to measure the growth of P grandis as a function of temperature.
