In southwestern Japan, damage caused to soy-bean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants by common cut-worm (CCW; Spodoptera litura Fabricius) is a serious problem. We estimate that insecticide use for the control of CCW costs 8.6 billion yen per year. The use of CCW-resistant soybean cultivars would allevi-ate the problem. Some plant lines, for example 'PI229358', 'PI227687', 'PI171451', and 'Himeshira-zu', have field resistance to CCW or other insects (Vanduyn et al. 1971, Beach et al. 1985, Ko-MATSU et al. 2004).
