The use of Pd membranes in catalytic membrane reactors has been much lauded for their H2 separation properties. However, small quantities of H2S present in the gas stream destroy the Pd membranes by forming bulk sulfides [1]. Pd/Cu alloy membranes have sparked interest due to their greater H2S tolerance [2]. However, the sulfur tolerant fcc alloy phase has a low H2 permeance [3]. This work compares two techniques for obtaining both H2S resistance and a high H2 permeance in Pd/Cu alloy membranes by fabricating non-homogeneous Pd/Cu alloy membranes. Furthermore, the membranes were tested extensively in H2, He and H2S/H2 atmospheres ranging from 0.2 - 50 ppm and in the temperature range of 250 - 500°C for several thousand hours.
