摘要

The recent spike in crude oil prices, coupled with the political instability plaguing various petroleum producing countries worldwide, there has been a renewed focus on finding alternative domestic sources of energy. In the United States in 2008, 95% of energy consumed in the transportation sector comes from petroIeum[1], therefore the development of liquid transportation fuels from other sources is imperative. This coupled with the prospect of carbon management practices, suggests that research and development efforts be focused on the production of synthetic transportation fuels from indigenous carbonaceous feedstocks,such as coal,oil shale and biomass. Coal represents about 70% of world's proven fossil fuel resources and as at the end of 2007[2] and the United States leads the world with 28% of proven coal reserves[3]. Therefore, due to its abundance and relatively low cost, coal will most likely be a key component for synthetic fuels in an effort to meet national economic and supply demands.
