The aim of the present study was to identify at species level and to investigate by Etest the susceptibility of some oral streptococcal isolates from oral and respiratory tract infections to: penicillin G, amoxicillin, cefotaxime, erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracycline. The minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged between: 0.002-0.75mg/l for penicillin G, 0.012-2mg/l for amoxicillin, 0.012-1mg/l for cefotaxime, 0.016-4mg/l for erythromycin, 0.016-0.047mg/l for clindamycin and 0.047-256mg/l for tetracycline. Reduced susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics was found in 15% of the isolates. About half of them were resistant to tetracycline, while 10% were resistant to erythromycin. Since oral streptococci might produce serious infections which need antibiotic treatment, it is necessary to test periodically the susceptibility of the clinically important isolates.
