Iron-silicate stones are produced within the smelting process of copper at the Norddeutsche Affinerie AG (NA) in Hamburg. With this industrial process the valuable product iron-silicate is gained, which is mainly used in hydraulic and coastal engineering works in northern Germany with respect to excellent material characteristics. One of the major characteristics are the high apparent density with more than 3.6 t/m~3 (i.e. density of granite is 2.6 t/m~3), position stability according to stone shape and the frost-proof. The increased apparent density makes it possible that revetments can be build with a smaller thickness for given mass per unit area and relatively smaller stone sizes, which leads automatically to a reduction of hydraulic impact. Further advantages are protection of natural recourses and material consistency compared to natural stones like granite. In case of increased hydraulic loads on harbour or offshore structures iron-silicate can be used as aggregate in the concrete in order to produce experienced blocks.
