Epidemiological studies indicate that intake of tomato-derived products and blood lycopene levels are inversely related to prostate cancer risk. Lycopene, a carotenoid responsible for the red pigmentation of tomatoes, is a potent antioxidant that might modulate processes related to mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, cell differentiation, and proliferation. To test the hypothesis that lycopene might function as a chemoprevention agents by modulating cytoprotective enzymes in prostate tissue, prostate primary epithelial cells were treated with lycopene and analyzed using quantitative proteomics based on iTRAQ LC-MS/MS.
