N-C_(beta) and C_(alpha)-C_(beta) bond cleavages are disfavored within (beta-amino acid residues due to the instability of the resulting C_(beta) radical (except for when resonantly stabilized by the side chain: isoAsp). The fragmentation proceeds via the complementary channel i.e. electron capture at the protonated backbone amide nitrogen (when available), leading to the -a/-y fragment formation. Cyclic beta amino acid at the n~(th) position enhanced the formation of -a_(n)(centre dot) and -a_(n+1)(centre dot)fragments as -a(centre dot)fragments from both sides of the modified residue were observed.
