Gold nanoclusters are projected for use in applications such as medical imaging, optics, catalysis, and targeted drug delivery. Because the properties of nanoclusters vary with core size and composition, it is anticipated that many applications will require monodisperse or nearly monodisperse clusters of specific compositions in order to achieve optimal efficacy. A problem for realizing this technology is that synthesis procedures that produce truly homogenous nanoclusters of chosen nuclearity are unknown. An atomistic level of understanding of the chemical processes governing cluster growth is unavailable. This study was designed to reveal the chemical reactions that govern early growth of phosphine-protected gold nanoclusters.
