The extraction of hydrocarbons has the potential for the release of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOC/SVOCs) either as fugitive atmospheric emissions, process water releases or from accidental spills during handling or transportation. There is a need for methodology, which allows for real time, infield analysis that provides meaningful data without tedious or lengthy post possessing time to decouple potential isobaric interferences. The aim of this work was to utilize chemical ionization (CI) in a rugged, field portable, on -line membrane introduction mass spectrometer (MIMS) capable of both aqueous and atmospheric monitoring. A cylindrical ion trap mass spectrometer provides an ideal system to examine and apply CI / ion molecule reactions f or selective trace contaminant ionization and analysis.
