This quantitative proteomics approach using stable isotope labeling and LC-MS/MS analysis has allowed the systems-level analysis of protein expression in IAPV infected honey bees. This analysis represents an important first application to quantitative MS to this non-model host-pathogen system to identify the mechanism of infection. Proteins involved in processes including translation and the ubiquittin-proteasome pathway were identified. Future investigation of these pathways will be useful to determine details of the honey bee immune response and guidelines for treatment of infected hives.
