Although we have seen significant improvements in pretreatment equipment to ensure that boiler feed water is consistently of high purity, upsets and failures do occur in the water treatment plant. These occurrences can be short in duration or chronic long term issues which can negatively impact BFW water quality. In addition, the trend to maximize condensate recovery has resulted in an increase of metal oxides in the BFW (which is not condensate polished) and can lead to deposit formation in the boiler. The author's paper provides a thorough review of the current science and best practices for those evaluating when and how to chemically clean a boiler.
