The application of safety and sustainability in the design and production of nanomaterials is complicated by the existing focus on the potential impact of nano-products, diversity of the nanotechnological field, and the Collingridge dilemma. We will argue that retrospective learning for established disciplines and studying environmental, health, and safety (EHS) issues on a case-by-case basis can be used as an alternative way of coping with these three problems. The approach will be illustrated in a case study on novel sunscreens that contain nano- sized titanium dioxide (TiO_2) particles by applying four concepts derived from the twelve green chemistry principles.
