With this study the relations between the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship and self-esteem were investigated in Turkish, Dutch and Turkish-Dutch (ethnic minority in the Netherlands) adolescents. The sample included 436 Turkish, 238 Dutch and 80 Turkish-Dutch adolescents, 14 to 18 years of age, who completed questionnaires assessing positive and negative quality of the parent-adolescent relationship and self esteem. The results showed that girls have a lower level of self-esteem than boys, however, this gender difference was less pronounced in the Turkish group.
