Subsyllabic graphophonological strategy on the CVC words: Is CV a locus of serial processing or L1 transfer?

The present study investigated the role of sublexical components in the phonological encoding of an English word with the word-naming task of the prime-mask-target setting. Targets comprised sixty single syllabic words most frequently used in EL2 materials with the consonant-vowel construct of CVCC. Three different priming conditions were used: the onset and core (CV) overlapping CVC word condition; the rime (VCC) overlapping CVCC word (a different onset and an identical rime) condition; and the control of four hash marks (####). The participants were twenty-five EL2 Japanese and eleven EL1 Americans. The result indicated a similar tendency of naming latencies between groups, with the fastest on the CV overlapping condition. While a visual word recognition theory referred to the onset priming effects and the larger segmental overlap effect on serial processing (e.g., Scheller, 2007), in the context of EL2 acquisition, the effect could be related to a strategic change from L1 for correctly reading English words.
