Botulinum toxin A (BoNT/A) is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that interacts within peripheral nerve endings with a synaptosome-associated protein, SNAP-25, that specifically inhibits the transport of acetylcholine to the cell membrane. BoNT/A temporarily chemically denervates the muscle. This effect has been used to treat hyperactive facial wrinkles to gain a natural friendly and relaxed expression. The detailed knowledge of the active compound and the anatomy are prerequisites of BoNT/A usage in cosmetic medicine. BoNT/A can be sued for horizontal lines of the forehead, frown lines and Crow's feet. Other indications include bunny lines, brow lift, suborbital usage to open the eyes, upper lip lines, gingival smile, marionette lines, cobblestone chin and mental crease. Recent investigations suggest a positive long-term effect on dermal and epidermal remodelling and therefore anti-ageing activity.
