Environmental deterioration is becoming an important problem for improvement of life quality. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) may play an important role in reduction of the life cycle environment impacts, because production value of SMEs occupied about 60% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in China. Life Cycle Assessment is widely used to calculate environmental influence for products and services. A LCA software tool may greatly increase LCA efficiency and reduce LCA cost, because a huge number of data will be used and LCA process is very complicated. This paper aims to discuss the development of LCA software SME-LCA with focus on home appliance for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for the purpose of improvement of LCA efficiency. First, data format for adoption of SME-LCA is established based on the comparative analysis of ISO/TS 14048 data documentation format and the data format being used in Europe, US and Japan. Second, design concepts and functional modules of SME-LCA are introduced. This paper also provides guidelines and methods for future development of SME-LCA. As an example, a selected typical SME in suburb of Shanghai, which produces refrigerator half a million sets annually, is visited and technicians are interviewed for collection of data, processes onsite and machines parameters, delivery, use and maintenance. The application of the software tool discussed in this paper may help SMEs to better conduct LCA to identify improvement opportunities to reduce life cycle environmental impacts.
