摘要

RUNNING A GAUGING PIG before an Inline Inspection (ILI) tool run is very important. Many times if this is not done, the risk of tool run failure increases drastically however, a successful gauge pig run with no plate deflections is not always indicative of a future successful Inline Inspection (ILI) run. Many times the Inline Inspection (ILI) tool run will result in failed data due to debris. A small amount of debris on the pipe wall is often not removed by standard mechanical cleaning runs and will likely not be affected by a gauge pig run. Yet the Inline Inspection (ILI) tool, due to the tool's complex configuration including length, very strong magnets and overall mass, will generally deliver large amounts of residual debris on completion of the run. The debris will often build up on the tool over the duration of the run and can damage tool sensors, odometers and other components. Failing an Inline Inspection (ILI) tool run costs the pipeline operator both time and money as resources must be deployed and re-deployed, flows often must be slowed to facilitate optimal inspection tool speed and third party contractors must be engaged to provide support services associated with transporting a working computer (the ILI tool) through an operating pipeline.. "Getting the ILI right the first time will increasingly be important as the oil and gas industry tackles the more difficult lines. Failure to achieve first run success will result in additional costs on ILI activities with individual project costs potentially many times higher than the original budget. These costs include additional runs; associated lost production; tool repairs or recovery." [Guidance on achieving ILI First Run Success December 2012; Pipeline Operators Forum, p.9]
