Electrical stimulation (ES) is known to act as a signal for peripheral nerve regeneration. However, the mechanism of action of ES in nerve tissue regeneration is unclear: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ES .on Schwann cells (SCs), as these cells' play a pivotal role in the repair of peripheral nerve injury by providing a myelin sheath and secreting neurotrophic factors involved in axon regeneration. Here, we describe how ES can activate primary SCs and induce the functional differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) into Schwann cells.
