The heat transfer processes in an internal combustion engine can be modeled with a variety of methods. These methods range from simple thermal networks to multidimensional differential equation modeling. Thermal network models, using resistors and capacitors, are very useful for rapid and efficient estimation of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer processes in engines. Using a thermal network, the significant resistances to heat flow, and the effects of changing material thermal conductivity, thickness, and coolant properties can be easily determined.
