Female athletes are more likely to sustain an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury than male athletes. Previous study has showed that female individuals had larger anterior knee laxity than their male counterparts [1]. Researchers have also reported that knee laxity and hyperextension knee were a possible factor contributing to ACL injury [2]. Loudon showed that a person with hyperextension knee, either healthy or ACL-injured, had poorer proprioceptive control. Even more, ACL-injured subjects with hyperextension knee demonstrated a declined function of proprioception feedback loop and the ability to initiate protective reflexes [3]. To quantify anterioposterior (A-P) displacement of the knee joint, KT-2000 knee ligament arthrometer is frequently used in the individuals suspected with injury of (ACL). Previous studies have investigated the validity and reliability of its previous model, the KT-1000 arthrometer. The major advance of KT-2000 is allow the users to obtain parameters representing knee laxity characteristics not only from the visual read on the dial, but also from the graphic output of an external-connected plotter and from the recorded analogue data to a computer [4]. Although this instrument can provide plenty information regarding to the mechanical property of the knee ligaments, limited published paper has used the recorded analogue data in a computer to further analyze the knee laxity characteristics. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no study has discussed the agreement between the visual-read and the computer-extracted results. The reliability of many parameters calculated from the analogue output has neither been documented. Furthermore, the relation between knee laxity and hyperextension knee has not been investigated in the literature. Therefore, the aims of this study were to establish clinical validity of the computer-extracted results by comparing to the visual-read, to evaluate the intra-rater reliability of the computed parameters firstly, and then to investigate the characteristics of knee laxity in healthy young female with hyperextension knee and compared to who with non-hyperextension knee.
