Inter-Green Interval Calculation for Signalized Intersections

To ensure the safety and to improve the efficiency of the traffic, as well as avoiding the jam during the transition of conflict phase, a calculate method of inter-green interval has been proposed. Then based on the joint knowledge of the traffic control theory and the traffic conflict principles, with the centering on the security transition function, the implication of amber interval and whole-red time has been clarified and then confirmed. After that, the safety conditions for the drivers which should be satisfied in the condition of parking choice and acrossing the intersections security are also suggested. As the research progresses, the possibility of causing the dilemma zone emerged in the different critical stopping distances and the limitation clearance distances has been discussed, further calculating method of minimum inter-green interval which could eliminate the dilemma zone is finally determined to distribute the amber interval and the whole-red time. With the example of the real intersections in the city of Changchun, the rationality and practicability of the method is well proved.
