Luminescent Properties of Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Rigid Tritopic Carboxylate Ligands

Lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), constructed from Ln~(3+) ions and organic ligands, have attracted a great attention not only for their impressive structural diversity, but also for their potential application in the field of luminescence.1 Most Ln~(3+) ions have excellent luminescent properties such as high color purity and relatively long luminescence lifetimes. Unfortunately, it is well-known that a direct excitation of Ln~(3+) ions is compromised because of their low absorption coefficients. However, the excitation process can be enhanced by introducing organic ligands into the local environment of Ln~(3+) ions. The effective excitation is then realized by so-called antenna effect. This phenomenon relies on the fact that the incident excitation is first absorbed by organic ligands. Then the energy is transferred to the Ln~(3+) ions, which become excited and subsequently emit a characteristic radiation. In this context, luminescent properties of Ln-MOFs with 4,4',4"-(benzene-l,3,5-triyl)tribenzoate (LI) and 4,4',4"-(pyridine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzoate (L2) ligands will be presented.
