AMSAT has adopted a new strategy for the Fox program. Rather than develop a single,multi-mission (and very complex) satellite, we will develop a much simpler FMtransponder satellite, Fox-1, as a replacement for AO-51 and Fox-2 as an advancedtechnology,linear transponder satellite.This new strategy eliminates several major technical risks from the Fox-1 design. Thatwill allow us to have a replacement for AO-51 in a much faster time frame and theengineering team will more quickly gain experience in the full development cycle of ourfirst CubeSat. It also may allow us to qualify for the 2011 NASA ELaNa program.Eliminating the need for an FM transponder will also help reduce the complexity of theFox-2 design and will provide a clearer path to a new linear transponder satellite. Wehope to learn from the experience of developing Fox-1 and incorporate our newknowledge into the design of Fox-2.
