It's time for mobile and handheld amateursatellite communications and we can do iteasily. Proposals for amateur satelliteconstellations have been made in the past,but they assume a coordinated effort. Such aneffort is unrealistic in the catch-as-catchcanamateur environment. This paper suggeststhat the future growth of amateur satellitescan in fact accommodate uncoordinated growthand still provide synergistic advantagesto mobile and handheld operations. There areseveral factors driving this concept makingit easier, cheaper and more viable:1. Launohes are plentiful, many free rides exist2. Eleotronios oan be smaller than a softball3. The link from a handheld oan be done with 1 watt4. Dual band RT's are plentiful5. One HT has a built-in 1200/9600 THe and kbrd/display6. Mobiles are a oonvenient time to operate for many7. Travelers need satellite comma in remote areas8. NT/mobiles need little ooax, no preamps. nor oomplexa.ntennaa9. Mobiles/Handhelds provide a oommon user oonfiguration10. HT/oani downlinks are ideal for sohool demonstrations11. Many Sohools want to build satellites for eduoation12. Amateur Satellites should not oompete with the freebandwidth of the internet for fixed stations. Weshould conoentrate some of our satellite bandwidthon amateur communications for mobiles and handhelds.
